Language of
the Gods
Sanskrit Words
and the Great Ideals of a Sacred Language
Course
Description and Objectives
Dharma, Karma,
Avatara, Atma, Ahimsa, Guru, Mahatma, Namaste
– words you may have heard before, but
what do they
truly mean? What depth lies behind
them? What
relevance do they have in living your life?
Examine the deep meanings of these and other
words in Language of the Gods – an
introduction to the Sanskrit words, ideas and
ideals that raised a grand and ancient
civilization.

This course is intended
to give the student an introduction to powerful
Sanskrit words and their practical and
metaphysical significance. In each class,
groups of related words, their origins and
meanings, will be examined, elucidated and
discussed. Each class will introduce a few key
Sanskrit terms and focus on the clarification
and understanding of these, rather than an
accumulation of many poorly understood words.
The aim is not to stockpile more information in
the brain, but rather to deepen the experience
of what these words mean for us. In doing so,
we can begin to help ourselves to bring out a
greater inner depth and clarity. The terms will
be studied in their transliterated form and
while the Devanaagarii script will not be
studied, some script may be introduced in the
course.
